Divest Rutgers Newark From Fossil Fuels
We call on Rutgers University and the Rutgers Newark community, students, alumni, and staff to come together and divest our $700 million dollar endowment to from the fossil fuel industry and toward our future. We would like to immediately freeze these investments and commit to complete divestment over the next five years. Our sense of urgency in signing this letter cannot be overstated. Humanity’s reliance on burning fossil fuels is leading to a marked warming of the Earth’s surface, a melting of ice the world over, a rise in sea levels, acidification of the oceans, and an extreme, wildly fluctuating, and unstable global climate. These physical and chemical changes, some of which are expected to last hundreds, if not thousands, of years are already threatening the survival of countless species on all continents. And because of their effects on food production, water availability, air pollution, and the emergence and spread of human infectious diseases, they pose unparalleled risks to human health and life.
Why is this important?
This is the issue of our generation. Join me in a MLK style non-violent protest to take back our future. We need you, the people of Rutgers Newark to sign our petition to tell the board of directors to divest our endowment from fossil fuels. Rutgers continued investment in the fossil fuel industry is leading us down a path of more erratic weather and destruction. Be on the right side of history and tell the board to invest in our future. I'm encouraging you to join and sign our petition to divest Rutgers' $700 million dollar endowment out of fossil fuels, a movement that continues to be successful in campuses all across the country. This is the issue of our generation, act now.
