Campaign to divest Berkshire public bodies and institutions

Get on-board the Global Divestment Mobilisation: UK

Campaigning for the local government, public institutions, banks, museums and universities to divest from fossil fuels.

If it’s wrong to wreck the climate, it’s wrong for our universities, pension funds, places of worship, cities, museums and banks to profit from that wreckage.

Fossil fuel companies have been driving the climate crisis and delaying action on climate change for decades.

Get Involved, where already thousands of people everywhere to highlight the impacts of our institutions’ investments in fossil fuels and do the right thing: divest!

"Eg. Reading Council agreed to go fossil free with its direct investments. However progress with getting Berkshire Pension Fund to divest from fossil fuels has stalled. We need you to lobby your councillor who is on the panel of Berkshire Pension Fund to keep up the pressure.

The Reading councillor on the panel for Berkshire pension fund is Glenn Dennis and he can be emailed via this link, http://www.reading.gov.uk/CllrGlennDennis

You could email him for example saying why tackling climate change is important to you and asking him for an update on Berkshire pension fund divesting from fossil fuels."

The same goes with any institution of your preference.

We will be asking people to sign petition sheets asking our local councillors and lead councillors of Berkshire Borough's six unitary authorities to divest from fossil fuels.

Why is this important?

Campaigning for the banks to divest from fossil fuels.

AROUND THE WORLD:
It's started. People all over the world are taking action to divest their institutions from fossil fuels #FOSSILFREE

We're all part of institutions that ought to be looking out for the public good, from city and state governments to religious institutions to other kinds of charities and non-profits. Most of these institutions invest money in stocks and bonds, and have a responsibility to divest from an industry that’s destroying our future, and reinvest in solutions to climate change.

Even as extreme weather events like Hurricane Sandy, floods, droughts and fires threaten to overwhelm local budgets, federal inaction to solve this crisis is all but stalled. We have the solutions, but we won’t see any political progress on the issue until we can weaken the power of the fossil fuel industry.

The bottom line is this: divestment is the only moral choice for institutions that care about the planet and its residents. Solving the climate crisis is the only practical choice for governments that care about their solvency.

We're asking for these six Boroughs and institutions to:

1. Immediately freeze any new investments in fossil fuels.
2. Divest from direct ownership and any commingled funds that include fossil fuel public equities and corporate bonds within 5 years.

2017
This year it’s time for the remaining institutions to catch up and make a fossil free Berkshire a reality. Find the nearest Council to you and come for a short rally and photo opportunity with a fossil fuel puppet. Bring friends, family, children, signs, and a hunger to take local action on climate change.

Local campaigners take every opportunity to gather outside your Town Hall to demand that your Councils remove dirty fossil fuel investments from their Pension Funds. So wear something red - if you can - to help make a red line outside our Councils against dirty fuels.

Help us asking local residents to sign petition sheets asking the councillors and lead councillors of Berkshire Borough's six unitary authorities to divest from fossil fuels. Let's keep up the pressure on our public bodies like Berkshire Pension Fund.

How it will be delivered

Together with local NGO's, Green Party Reading, Global Justice Reading, Greenpeace Reading, People and the Planet Reading, Ecopreneurs for the Climate in Reading and Climate Change Centre Reading deliver the signatures to the six local civic centres.

Thank you! to everyone who has helped publicise the importance of our banks divesting from fossil fuels and investing in #REnewables

• and in Global Justice Reading stall on Saturday as part of the Global Divestment Mobilisation.

Over the last few years, fossil fuel divestment has taken off in a way nobody quite predicted. In the UK we've passed 100 divestment commitments - from universities, faith groups, health organisations, local government and pension funds. We made some useful contacts as well as collecting a surprising number of names to send to the banks, etc.!
