The state of Montana should immediately freeze any new investments in fossil fuels and divest from direct ownership in any commingled funds that include fossil fuel public equities and corporate bonds within 5 years.

Why is this important?

Montana state government should be looking into what is best for the public good. What is best for public good is halting climate change. They have a responsibility to divest from an industry that’s destroying our future, and reinvest in solutions to climate change.

Even as extreme weather events like continual drought and wildfires that just keep getting worse threatening to overwhelm local budgets, federal inaction to solve this crisis is all but stalled. We have the solutions, but we won’t see any political progress on the issue until we can weaken the power of the fossil fuel industry.

Reasons for signing

  • 350-Missoula is officially forming and one of our focuses is divestment
  • It's a good place to start.
  • It's time to get real about our environment and our future. Montana State Government could be great leaders by freezing and stopping fossil fuel investments. Is it unrealistic of me to ask our representative to do such a thing? No. Stop the burning. It's hot in here.
