Divest Nashville, TN from Fossil Fuels

Nashville Davidson County should immediately freeze any new investments in fossil fuels and divest from direct ownership in any commingled funds that include fossil fuel public equities and corporate bonds within 5 years.

Why is this important?

We need to wean ourselves off fossil fuels across the globe. One great way to start the process is to divest from any investments in the fossil fuel industry. Cities, counties and organizations across the country are doing it RIGHT NOW.

Nashville saw an important example in 2010 of just how vulnerable cities can be due to adverse weather when the city was flooded. (see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2010_Tennessee_floods for details). These kinds of weather events are predicted to increase in frequency and severity all around the world within the century. The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change has predicted with significant levels of certainty that adverse weather, droughts, historic precipitation events and other events of significance to humans and our economy all will increase due to climate change.

We know that fossil fuels are a major contributor to climate change. The science is conclusive. It is time to take a stand NOW for current and future generations. This is a moral imperative that affects us all.

Please join us in signing this petition to divest Nashville of all direct and indirect investment holdings in fossil fuels.

How it will be delivered

The petition will be emailed and delivered in person, ideally by press conference.
