Divest Oak Ridge From Fossil Fuels
We are asking the City of Oak Ridge to:
1. Immediately freeze any new investments in fossil fuels.
2. Divest from direct ownership and any commingled funds that include fossil fuel public equities and corporate bonds within 5 years.
Oak Ridge has historically been a center for progressive action and scientific innovation, so it is vital that we lead the way in our region for divesting from energy sources that are causing catastrophic climate change. By divesting from these industries, we can make a statement that damaging the environment for profit is morally wrong. This global issue has a local solution: divestment.
Why is this important?
Since climate change is already affecting people around the world, we need to step up as a community and take action. By divesting from fossil fuels, we can invest in other technologies that will help fuel the future without destroying the planet. In Oak Ridge, we have the power and resources to develop and implement these technologies, so we must lead the way by taking a stand against the fossil fuel industry.
