Divest Salt Lake City from Fossil Fuels!
Climate change represents a critical threat to the future of Utah and all Utahns. We call on Mayor Becker and Salt Lake City to immediately freeze any new investments in corporations directly involved in the extraction and/or sale of fossil fuels. We further call on Mayor Becker to divest Salt Lake City from direct ownership and any commingled funds that include fossil fuel public equities and corporate bonds, and to complete this divestment within 5 years.
Why is this important?
Climate change represents a critical threat to the future of Utah and all Utahns. An already dry region, unchecked fossil fuel consumption will bring prolonged drought and intense heat waves to Utah that will devestate the State's ski, tourist, and agricultural industries. For years now, fossil fuel corporations and the Democrats and Republicans they have bought have been claiming that climate change is a hoax or that it won't be serious, because they want to keep profiting from our oil, gas, and coal addiction. Yet scientists are warning that unchecked fossil fuel consumption will turn the U.S. Southwest, from Kansas to California, into a permanent desert. Farmers and ranchers in Texas and Kansas are already losing their livelihoods to drought. The Mississippi River is so low that it is being dredged so barges can get through. Water levels in Lake Mead have hit historic and critical lows. The time to act is Now!
