Divest Santa Rosa From Fossil Fuels

We are proud to be residents of a city that has already adopted a Socially Responsible Investment policy. We understand that the City of Santa Rosa has no current investments in fossil fuel and ask that it makes the current policy permanent by passing a resolution to forgo any future investments in the fossil fuel industry.

Why is this important?

In the words of Seattle's Mayor McGinn, "We're the first generation to see the effects of climate change, and the last generation who can do anything about it." The world leaders agreed in the Copenhagen Climate Summit that raising the global temperature more than 2 degrees Celsius would be devastating for civilization. The burning of fossil fuels is the major contributor to the greenhouse gas build-up which causes global warming. To prevent climate chaos, the fossil fuel industries have to keep 80% of their reserves underground. They will not do this willingly. Therefore, Santa Rosa should join 36 other cities--including Seattle, San Francisco,Santa Monica, Richmond and Eugene--and permanently remove the dirty fuel companies from its portfolio. A stable climate would be the best gift we could give our children and grandchildren.

We might be close to getting Santa Rosa added to the list of cities that have resolved to divest from fossil fuels. We need to keep the pressure up. Please ask family and friends to sign the petition if they haven't done so already. I hope to bring good news soon.

With the new Santa Rosa City Council, I am optimistic that we can get Santa Rosa to commit to divest from fossil fuels. I made a public comment at the City Council meeting in January and am in contact with Councilor Julie Combs. To view my comment, go to the 3:11:46 mark.
