Divest United Methodist Church from Fossil Fuels

Divest United Methodist Church from Fossil Fuels

Immediately freeze any new investments in fossil fuels and divest from direct ownership and any commingled funds that include fossil fuel public equities and corporate bonds within three years.

Why is this important?

Investing in fossil fuels in this era, with what we know today is happening to our climate as the result of burning fossil fuels, makes us complicit in "destroying the global ecological balance that provides the life-support systems for the planet."*.
If wrecking the climate is wrong, then profitting from that wreckage is unconscionable and certainly not consistent with Methodist or Christian values.

*(Quote from Resolution # 1023, "Environmental Justice for a Sustainable Future" from the Book of Resolutions of the United Methodist Church).

Reasons for signing

  • We are the only creatures that can predict our specie's demise to our progeny. God-like as we are, why would we want to create a reality of planetary death ?
  • God gave us this wonderful planet. I'm impressed enough to believe we should keep it cleaned up.
  • The science is clear- you cannot simultaneously continue to burn fossil fuels and experience a healthy planet. Religion should be just as clear- you cannot simultaneously be a good steward of the Earth and support the fossil fuel industry by earning money from it.
