Fossil Free UCR

Board of Trustees/Money Managers
1. Immediately freeze any new investments in fossil fuels.
2. Divest from direct ownership and any commingled funds that include fossil fuel public equities and corporate bonds within 5 years.

Why is this important?

In the last decade the Earths climate has been the hottest its ever been in recoded history, beginning in 1880. Climate change is largely due to human activity, majority being from the combustion (burning) of fossil fuels.

Fossil Free UCR sees the UC's decision to Invest in fossil fuels as a harmful decision, as it chooses to reel in profits over the well being of this planet and the people on it. Not only is investing in the fossil fuel industry harmful for the health of our planet, it allows for class distinction, which widens the gap between the rich and the poor. Fossil fuel industries continue to marginalize people of color, and those of low income, middle and working classes for the sake of political and economic power, which they exert over people for mere profit. Rooftop solar and other renewable energies should not be a commodity for the rich, they should be available and affordable for all. Fossil fuel companies will do whatever it takes to create an illusion about a world that can't actually run on renewable clean technology using their corporate power and wealth to do so.

The UC has divested before against the South African government during apartheid and it lead to great change. Nelson Mandela himself has stated that the University of California's massive divestment was a huge factor, which facilitated abolishing white-minority rule in South Africa.

UC Riverside has one of the largest advantages of re-investing in solar technologies throughout the Inland Empire, instead of lining the pockets of Top Executives in fossil fuel technologies. Energy is no longer a public right but one that keeps the many under the control of the few that's why we must divest at UCR and use peoples power to do so!
