NSHE: Divest from Fossil Fuels Now!

PETITION SUPPORTERS INCLUDE: The Sierra Club Toiyabe Chapter (NV & Eastern CA), the Progressive Leadership Alliance of Nevada, the Reno Justice Coalition, the University of Nevada Environmental Club, and others.

With the coal and oil industries being challenged, and with solar and geothermal industries so important to Nevada, now is the time for the Board of Regents to:

1) Freeze any new investments in fossil fuels
2) Divest from direct ownership and any commingled funds that include fossil fuel investments
3) Invest in clean energy and energy efficiency, prioritizing low income and communities of color who are hardest hit by climate change.

NSHE is comprised of the following eight higher education institutions: College of Southern Nevada (CSN), Desert Research Institute (DRI), Great Basin College (GBC), Nevada State College (NSC), Truckee Meadows Community College (TMCC), University of Nevada, Las Vegas (UNLV), University of Nevada, Reno (UNR), and Western Nevada College (WNC)

Why is this important?

We're all part of institutions that ought to be looking out for the public good, from governments at all levels to higher learning institutions and many other kinds of public and non-profit institutions. Many of these institutions invest money in stocks and bonds, and therefore have a responsibility to divest from an industry that’s diminishing the quality of our future and to reinvest in solutions that protect our future.

Even as more extreme weather events along with escalating climate change effects threaten our environments and safety, not enough action is being taken to responsibly address the seriousness of these challenges. We have the solutions, but we won’t see truly effective progress on the issue until we can further weaken the power of the fossil fuel industry and support clean energy and sustainable alternatives.

Divestment not only makes financial sense with dying industries, but in this case it also makes moral sense as a means to ameliorate the worst effects that climate change will surely bring.
