Fossil Free Europe

As extreme weather events – the record floods, droughts and fires seen in recent months – threaten to overwhelm local budgets, government and business, action to address the climate crisis has all but ground to a halt. The solutions already exist, but we’re unlikely to see any progress until we stand up and actively shift power away from the fossil fuel industry.

The bottom line is this: divesting from fossil fuels is the only choice for institutions that care about the planet and its residents. Solving the climate crisis is the logical choice for governments that care about their financial and social stability.

We’re demanding that universities, religious institutions, pension funds, banks and local councils immediately:

1. Freeze any new investments in fossil fuels and divest from direct ownership of any existing funds that include fossil fuels.
2. Cancel sponsorship and funding contracts with fossil fuel companies.
3. Switch day-to-day banking activities to a bank with no fossil fuel investment activity.
4. Contact their pension fund manager and ask them to divest from direct ownership of any funds that include fossil fuels.

Europe is a diverse and complex region, with financial and political structures that vary, sometimes significantly, between countries. The concept of divestment is, however, quite straightforward. Join us as the divestment movement grows in Europe, and help your local community go ‘Fossil Free’!
