Petition Delivery w/ Naomi Klein

Last spring, the world’s top scientists wrote an unprecedented letter calling on science and natural history museums to cut all ties with the fossil fuel industry. Today, we the undersigned 56,000 + museum supporters join our voices in calling on the Utah Museum of Natural History to cut ties with the most destructive, powerful industry in history.

This summer, the California Academy of Sciences showed immense leadership in forging a path toward aligning their investments with their values. Now, we urge the Utah Museum of Natural History to show necessary leadership in removing the social and political license of the fossil fuel industry.

The most devastating impacts of climate change affect first and worst those who have done the least to contribute. To date, funds representing over $2.6 trillion in assets have committed to some level of divestment. As the Paris climate summit quickly approaches, it is crucial that our institutions illustrate climate action, signaling our governments to do the same.

This moment calls for leaders that are willing to do more than observe and curate history — it calls for leaders who are ready to help make it. We believe museums of science and natural history can be those leaders. Because, if we cannot challenge our institutions, how can we challenge our society?
