Divest Albany

Albany should immediately freeze any new investments in fossil fuels and divest from direct ownership in any commingled funds that include fossil fuel public equities and corporate bonds within 5 years.

Why is this important?

Around $100 billion of destruction caused by hurricanes Irene, Lee, and Sandy barely touched Albany. How long will it be until we experience the same kind of devastation? It's time for NY to stop investing our pension funds in oil, gas and coal, and go fossil free! That means our city and county governments must pressure the State Comptroller with more than just resolutions, but direct advocacy as well.

The City of Albany is a Climate Smart Community and yet, our city's funds for employees, teachers, police, firemen and school employees are all invested in coal, oil and gas companies that dump carbon into the atmosphere for free, and rig the political system so that they can continue to do so.

We need to take steps to make our city an example of low-carbon urban living, employing people to provide energy retrofits and install rooftop solar projects. If it is wrong to wreck the climate, then it is wrong to profit from that wreckage.
