Divest Des Moines

The city of Des Moines Iowa should immediately freeze any new investments in fossil fuels, and divest from direct ownership and any commingled funds that include fossil fuel public equities and corporate bonds within 5 years.

Why is this important?

Making this commitment to the future will continue the leadership that Iowa has demonstrated to the rest of the country by being at the forefront of civil liberties, public policy, renewable energy, and selecting the leadership of our country (as local residents know we vet presidential candidates).

Many related movements are gaining steam in Iowa, here are just a couple of recent (brief) articles about positive changes in Iowa's energy production and consumption.

The articles above demonstrate the power of people coming together to voice their opinions and affect change, but just as importantly I think they also demonstrate how important money and legislation are in making that happen.

One of the reasons I started this petition is my belief that money talks, it adds gravity to what we say, and it accelerates change better than anything else. If you can get behind that and you believe in being a good steward of the environment and preserving our way of life for the next generation then please take a few seconds to sign up. If you wish to help or contribute in any other way please feel free to let me know.

With the Earth's C02 levels reaching record highs of 400ppm and the increasing volatility of our weather, which has affected Iowa with 500 year floods in multiple geographic areas in multiple years over the last two decades, mixed with drought, blizzards, record highs and lows, shortened seasons, altered migratory patterns, and polluted water, we can no longer afford to sit on the sidelines and watch. The time to take action is now.

This is the logical next step for the city of Des Moines, Iowa to maintain its excellent record of leading by example and its your chance to make a difference through the influence of our elected leaders and the funds that they control. Together we can send a strong and clear signal to those that wish to profit from the destruction of our planet and those who will inherit the planet that we leave behind when we are gone.

How it will be delivered

The method of delivery will depend largely on how much ammunition the people of Des Moines give our petition, the larger the petition the more visibility we intend to receive when we deliver it.

Reasons for signing

  • It's less about the planet and more about breathing clean air.
  • Fossil fuels are a major contributor to climate change, and thus, sea level rise. Their attainment also fouls our inland and coastal waters and harms the health of many terrestrial and oceanic species.Des Moines should not invest in such harmful industries.
