Divest The Open University from fossil fuels

The signatories of this petition applaud the clear academic line followed by The Open University in teaching the science behind climate change, and the consequences of excessive 'greenhouse gas' emissions.

Further to this it seems only appropriate that The OU adapts its wider interaction with society, including financial matters to reflect the science taught by:

1. Immediately freezing any new investments in fossil fuels.
2. Divesting from direct ownership and any commingled funds that include fossil fuel public equities and corporate bonds within 5 years.

Why is this important?

To support the speediest conversion to reducing carbon dioxide emissions, encourage politicians to get serious themselves, and to be a consistent part of the solution rather than a part of the problem.

How it will be delivered

The petition will be ongoing. This will allow signature numbers to keep increasing, and the publicity pressure of the campaign to remain until such time as the OU publicly divests from fossil fuels.
Please do refer to the petition and current number of signatures when contacting the OU on this issue.

Reasons for signing

  • How can we expect commercial organisations to divest from fossil fuels when our universities, the bastions of science and intellectual high ground that they are, will not divest first?
  • Hoping to join the OU to study Geography and Environmental Science. My alma mater Durham University has recently divested from fossil fuels, I think the OU should be able to do the same. We need our leaders to set clear and ambitious targets, in order to achieve anything. Renewables all the way!
  • Because we are Human not stupid :-)

Things are, unfortunately still very slow with the Divest the OU movement and petition. But there is lots of activity on other divestment fronts. For more information, petitions, bank protests, and the chance to interact with likeminded folk, please do visit and join the campaign facebook group.

Campaigning really works. Petitions really work. Not every time- but often enough to have already prevented many damaging developments. Campaigning has led to banks changing fossil fuel investment policies; conflict palm oil companies being ejected from certification and being dropped by buyers; wildlife protection legislation; animal protection legislation; I believe Michael Gove's conversion to environmental protection may have been down to a campaign just before the last election, and so many more successes. Please use your power- Life on Earth can't afford for you not to.

Many thanks- Simon.
