Invest in Happiness, Not Fossil Fuels

Our beloved UTEP is known for its unique Bhutanese-inspired architecture, a nod to the small Himalayan nation of Bhutan, where Gross National Happiness (GNH) is the guiding principle. Bhutan's GNH emphasizes environmental conservation, sustainable development, and public health in the pursuit of collective well-being.

As UTEP students and community members, we are proud of our campus's distinct identity. However, we are deeply concerned about UTEP's continued investment in fossil fuel industries and its support for fracking research. It's time for UTEP to align its financial priorities with the Bhutanese values that have shaped its architecture.

We, the undersigned, call on UTEP to:

1. Divest fully from fossil fuel investments, including stocks, bonds, and other financial instruments tied to the fossil fuel industry.

2. Cease funding and support for all fracking research projects, and redirect those resources towards clean energy and sustainable development research.

3. Publicly commit to environmental conservation, sustainable development, and public health as guiding principles in line with Bhutan's Gross National Happiness philosophy.

Why is this important?

Climate change is an urgent threat to our planet, and we must act now to protect our environment and health. Our generation deserves a future free from the harmful effects of fossil fuels, and UTEP can play a crucial role in leading the way.

Join us in urging UTEP to invest in happiness, not fossil fuels, by signing this petition. Together, we can make a difference and ensure that our campus truly embodies the values of the Bhutanese kingdom that has inspired its beautiful architecture.
