• University of Oklahoma: Go Fossil Free!
Climate change is accelerating. We are witnessing the increasing impacts of a warming planet more and more consistently; in this last year alone our country experienced record-breaking heat, droughts, and hurricanes, which impacted hundreds of thousands of people and cost our country hundreds of billions of dollars. Hurricane Sandy alone caused $50bn in damages. Experts agree that global warming caused by humans burning fossil fuels will continue to accelerate and intensify these tragic climate disasters. The scientific consensus is clear and overwhelming; we cannot safely burn even half of global fossil-fuel reserves without dangerously warming the planet for several thousand years. As public pressure to confront climate change builds, we call on University of Oklahoma to immediately freeze any new investment in fossil-fuel companies, and to divest within five years from direct ownership and from any commingled funds that include fossil-fuel public equities and corporate bonds. We believe such action on behalf of University of Oklahoma will not only be a sound decision for our institution’s financial portfolio, but also for the well being of its current and future graduating classes, who deserve the opportunity to graduate with a future not defined by climate chaos. OU has thus far shown that it has the desire to become a more sustainable university and has put policies in place to achieve that goal. We hope that OU continues this effort by continuing the mission of being a more sustainable university. If OU divests from fossil fuels then it is showing that it is committed to not only making the campus sustainable and environmentally friendly but also the rest of the world. Thank you,

Southern California is particularly susceptible to climate change. Local beaches will be destroyed as oceans rise, ruining homes, landscapes, and beach economies. Wild fires are becoming more prevalent as average temperatures climb and climate refugees from Central and South America pose a serious threat to the stability of southern American regions. Experts agree that global warming caused by humans burning fossil fuels will continue to accelerate and intensify these tragic climate disasters. • College of Charleston: Go Fossil Free!
As an educational institution, with the goal of preparing the next generation of leaders, the College of Charleston has an obligation to lead by example and to illustrate to the student body the importance of a life directed by values and engaging in solutions. Where we put our money, and what we do with it, is a tangible representation of our values. To develop a set of institutional values and principles to guide our investments towards industries with whom we share core values serves to mutually enrich and integrate both parties, and to help the College identify and engage with its societal priorities and place in the community. We, the student body, alumni, faculty, staff and the broader College of Charleston community, urge the College's administration to engage collectively and pro-actively with the College of Charleston community to develop a set of institutional values that will guide the College’s future investment strategies. This initiative is consistent with the College’s commitment to guiding and supporting the next generation's engagement in solutions, and the return to a dynamic balance between the human and the biophysical systems of the Earth.
