Divest Nevada City from Fossil Fuels

Divest Nevada City from Fossil Fuels

We would like Nevada City to freeze any investments in fossil fuels from this point on, and to divest from any fossil fuel stocks, bonds and equities that it currently owns within the next five years.

Why is this important?

We are a group of students and teachers at Twin Ridges Home Study who are concerned about our climate. We are especially concerned about the high levels of ground level ozone in our atmosphere. The burning of fossil fuels is one of the main contributors to high ozone levels and a catalyst of climate change. This risks the health of current and future generations.

We are afraid of losing our beautiful environment including our clean air and water.

We would like Nevada City to continue to be at the forefront of environmental action. By divesting from fossil fuels we would begin to lead the nation in the fight against climate change.

Reasons for signing

  • Fossil Fuels, besides not being sustainable and contributing to Climate Change, is one of the primary reasons for the U.S. War in Iraq. U.S. Oil Corporations wanted access to State-owned and controlled Iraqi Oil. New Oil Deposits have been found off the coast of Syria, Gaza and in The Golan Heights. Wars over who is going to control "Peak Oil Reserves" is another major threat to human life and to the environment.
  • Fossil fuels are not a sustainable path. We need to put our energy into alternative sources of fuel, i.e. sunlight, vegetable oil, bio-diesels, etc.
  • Fossil fuels are a major contributor to climate change, and thus, sea level rise. Nevada City should not invest in such harmful industries.
